  1. Argentinian pampas and scrubland-dwelling
  2. rodent Lagostomus maximus of the chinchilla
  3. family. It is up to 66 cm/2.2 ft long with a
  4. 20 cm/8 in tail, and weighs 7 kg/15 lbs. It
  5. is grey and black, and has a large head and
  6. small ears. Viscachas live in warrens of up
  7. to 30 individuals. They are nocturnal, and
  8. feed on grasses, roots, and seeds. Mountain
  9. viscachas, genus Lagidium, are smaller and
  10. have long ears and tails, and are found in
  11. rocky places feeding by day on sparse
  12. vegetation.
